It took a bit of patience, pre-planning, and a whole lotta' labor to put away the graveyard of Shingle Creek Manor this year without resorting to off site storage somewhere. All the while I plotted and planned for something even bigger this next year, of which I'm sure the reality of it not being possible with just the two of us will slap me in the face around mid-Summer. For now, the shop is back to normal and the props have been neatly put away, and the stress of Christmas is upon us...
We hope everyone had an excellent Thanksgiving and found plenty to thankful for. Although Christmas had already found it's way to our store shelves before Halloween had even arrived, the official starting flag was waved today with the ridiculousness of Black Friday. So like many of you we are running the race of gift buying, cookie making, Christmas card sending, food baking, house decorating, before the big day panic that is Christmas. Good times....!

If you are one of the countless souls gathered amongst the masses that when mid-December rolls around,
you have been beaten severely around the head and shoulders area with the never-ending glut of holiday-themed programming coming out of your High-Definition happy boxes.
Tired of The Grinch ? Sick of Charlie Brown wrecking that damned pathetic looking Christmas tree ? Ready to punch Ralphie from A Christmas Story square in his giblets ? Then rejoice my fellow zombie aficionados, because The Discovery Channel has become the latest to jump on the back of the rampaging phenomenon of the living dead and it's impending holocaust.
'Zombie Apocalypse', airing Tuesday, December 18th will focus on the stories and disaster-preparation scenarios of 4 different people who, in varying ways are readying themselves for what they feel WILL be the end of all things. The main thing to remember here is that with the title plainly expressed, the show itself seems to insinuate that there can be an apocalypse without the dead rising from the graves, and while that certainly seems feasible......it just wouldn't be as fun if there weren't any zombies shambling around....anyone agree ? Oh well, tune into The Discovery Channel on Tuesday, December 18th - airtime is unlisted as of yet, but it's sure to be in the prime-time hours so check it out !

Zombie Cage Fighter Invades AMC's Comic Book Men

The undead have answered the bell for round 2 ! The largely popular independent comic book Zombie Cage Fighter, created by former UFC fighter Nate " Rock " Quarry, has sprung up again - this time making an appearance on AMC TV's hit show Comic Book Men.
On the show this past Thursday night, Nate stopped by the guys' shop and asked if they were interested in carrying his comic - the fellas agreed, but only if Nate could arrange a UFC-style cage fight between two costumed characters representing Jay & Silent Bob. All parties were in attendance including Kevin Smith & Jason Mewes, who both had great interest in watching their MMA dopplegangers kicking the crap out of each other - I won't ruin the rest for you if you haven't seen it yet, but trust me..its very interesting !
Nate also sat down with AMC to discuss the origins of his comic, where you can check out just by clicking on the pic of Ming Chen getting choked out, and then hit the link to read the interview I had with Nate myself this past summer when the comic was first slated to hit the shelves. If you haven't done so, also head on over to www.zombiecagefighter.com and grab an issue of this killer comic itself, along with awesome shirts, decals and lots of other goodies - ENJOY !

3500 Visits to Snow White: An Autistic Boy's Journey as a Book
To contact us Click HERE
Benjamin was an autistic child who rode Snow White's Scary Adventures literally thousands of times before it closed for good. It was the ride that brought him out of his autistic shell more than any other experience - and his father has written a book telling the story about Ben's relationship with this ride, since closed forever. And it's a good book, the kind all of us should be reading. It's the kind of book that transcends its supposed subject matter and becomes about everything else that matters in life and love; the kind of book that makes you better for having read it. Above all, it's a book that addresses emotions straight on. The father's emotions, Ben's emotions, and even our own emotions as readers.
If you don't mist up reading the chapter about Ben coming alive when stepping into the Magic Kingdom for the first time, then you may not have emotions. On Main Street, his cautious steps turned energetic, his spirit loosened and his joy unbuckled for perhaps the first truly freeing moment of his young life, and the reader is swept along, helpless, and all but right there alongside Ben. It reminds us what we love about the Disney parks, and in that, Ben's story is the story of all of us when we interact with these magical creations seen in three dimensional reality only a few places on earth.
Not all elements of the story have to do with Ben; there are sections about his birth, job hunting, a move across country, and other necessary components of the narrative that is being told. They may contribute to the logic of what was done and why, but they don't resonate the same way as Disney-focused chapters do. The prose springs to life most vividly when Ben is center stage. His second trip to WDW is just as hypnotic as his first, and darned if his 1,000th ride (as well as the 2000th ride) didn't foreshadow much of what would happen on his very last ride (indeed, the very last ride for ANYBODY) on the attraction when it shut down for good. For someone who was present at the very last night like myself, this was compelling reading indeed.
Every reader will be gripped by the drama of that final night and Ben's final ride. Would he make it to 3,500 rides? What would the very last ride be like? The fact that it was a public drama, played out in Internet message boards and twitter, made it somehow all the more like it belonged to all of us in some tangential way. I even contributed a photo of the day to the father, and it ended up in the finished book.
Ben's final ride is a touching one that resonates deeply of parental anguish and reward. I won't spoil the details for you, but you should seek it out. It's cathartic for all of us readers, too.
Buy the book from the author's site (http://shmoolok.com/book) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/3500-Autistic-Ten-Year-Romance-White/dp/1482093308) or Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/3500-Autistic-Ten-Year-Romance-ebook/dp/B00BFTDHV4).
Disclosure: I was given early access to a PDF version of the book.
